Fish Inspiration 13.01.2011

January 13th, 2011

Happy New Year. I hope you’ve had a wonderful Xmas (involving plenty of seafood)

I’m sure you have been watching Hugh’s FISH FIGHT on Channel 4. A very worthy campaign highlighting the very wasteful method of  ”discarding” fish.  Throwing dead “over quota” fish back overboard to me is a criminal act but seems to be the only option to the fishermen under the current European quota system.

Hugh’s aim is to raise the profile of this appauling system and get it stopped, once and for all.

If you wish to support Hugh and join his campaign, go to www.channel4.com/programmes/hughs-fish-fight. On the same website at  www.channel4.com/4food/recipes/popular-ingredients/fish-and-seafood/fish-inspiration you can watch me preparing and talking about 20 species of fish which are not under threat of over fishing.

Best wishes Rex

Winter is now moving in fast so us fishmongers need to wear more and more layers.

December 10th, 2010

This is my favorite time of year for fish as they are all in such perfect condition. Also we are blessed with all the wonderful shellfish that the colder months bring us.
We have started having Oyster Saturday’s in both our shops and it is getting more and more popular by the week.
The colder months does mean high winds and harsh weather at sea, so this can affect our availability sometimes. As most of our fish is wild and organic in the true sense of the word and is not grown on trees, if it ain’t caught, you cant have it. Its always best to go to your fishmonger with an open mind and not a preconceived idea, be guided by your fishmonger and by what looks nice. There will always be something to tempt you.
